Thai Pusam is one of the important festivals for Subrahmanya. In the month of Thai, on the day of the Nakshatra of Pushya, or Pusam in Tamil. Subrahmanya received the Shakti Vel from Devi Paramashakti. This day is the day Paramashakti gave Subrahmanya the Shakti Vel weapon to fight the Asura Soorapadma.

The tripurasuras three cities could only be destroyed when they aligned, this alignment happens the moment the Pushya Nakshtra aligns in conjunction with the full-moon. Paramashiva waited for this moment and destroyed the three cities as they aligned at this moment with the arrow he shot from his mighty bow Pinaka. This is the day Vallalar, one of the greatest poets of Tamil literature, went into a room and said to all his followers that he will not be found when the doors are opened again. This is what he said before he entered into Mahasamadhi along with his body as well. Months later the doors were open and inside the room nothing was found.

On the full moon day of Pausha month, Mother Durga incarnated Mata Shankabhari for the welfare of her devotees. According to the scriptures, on this day, Mother Durga took the form of Shankabhari to relieve the devotees from famine and severe food crisis on earth. Hence she is considered as the goddess of vegetables and fruits. Therefore, this full moon is also known as Shankabhari Purnima.

Here in Nithyanandeshwara Paramashiva Devalayam, at Adi Kailasa Nithyananda Sarvajnapeetham, we celebrate the auspicious festival of Thai Poosam with a grand chariot ceremony - rathotsavam, wherein, Bhagavan Sri Subrahmanya Swami, along with Devi Valli and Devi Devasena, are gracing us on a wooden royal chariot - ratham, and blessing all the devotees. Also, the Utsava Vigraha of our beloved bhagavan, the Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism, Bhagavan Nithyananda Paramashivam, is gracing us today on mayura vahana.

We offer our worship to Sri Subrahmana Swami, along with Devi Valli and Devi Devasena, and the SPH, Bhagavan Nithyananda Paramashivam and begin today’s Thaipusam rituals.
