Carana

PRAMANA:Āpta Pramāṇa - आप्त प्रमाण

Apta Pramana Source:Hathatatvakaumudi Ch.9.13


Original Verse:

अनुलोमविधानाभ्यां चारणाङ्गभ्रमो भवेत् |

दशधा चारणा मुख्या जघन्यान्या स्मृता बुधैः ॥ १३ ॥


Transliteration:

anulomavidhānābhyāṃ cāraṇāṅgabhramo bhavet |

daśadhā cāraṇā mukhyā jaghanyānyā smṛtā budhaiḥ ॥ 13 ॥


Translation:

Carana is movement of the limbs which is practiced on both sides.

Chiefly there are ten caranas.

According to the adepts, others are jaghanya (of less importance).

Ten Types of Caranas

Original Verse:

"शिरोजठरदोर्दण्डचरणद्वितयं तथा |

उरूजानुयुगं चैषां चारणा दशधा मता ॥ १४ ॥"


Transliteration:

śirojaṭharadordaṇḍacaraṇadvitayaṃ tathā |

urūjānuyugaṃ caiṣāṃ cāraṇā daśadhā matā ॥ 14 ॥


Translation:

Ten types of caranas involve head, stomach, hands, pair of legs, pair of thighs and knees.


Jaghanya Carana

Original Verse:

"मणिबन्धौ पदेऽन्गुल्यः सन्धयोऽन्ये च देहगाः |

जघन्या चारणा तेषां मुख्यमुख्यतया ततः ॥ १५ ॥

शतार्धं च तदर्धं च जघन्यादिशु चारणा |

चारणामाचरेदेवं प्रतिमासत्रयावधि ॥ १७ ॥"


Transliteration:

"maṇibandhau pade'ngulyaḥ sandhayo'nye ca dehagāḥ |

jaghanyā cāraṇā teṣāṃ mukhyamukhyatayā tataḥ ॥ 15 ॥

śatārdhaṃ ca tadardhaṃ ca jaghanyādiśu cāraṇā |

cāraṇāmācaredevaṃ pratimāsatrayāvadhi ॥ 17 ॥"


Translation:

"Wrist joints, feet, toes, and other joints in the body are prominent ones in jaghanya carana.

The jaghanya caranas should be practiced fifty or twenty-five times (a day) for three months."


Carana on Siva's Dancing Form

Original Verse:

"नृत्यरूपं शिवं ध्यात्वा चारणामाचरेद् बुधः |

हृदं संस्पृष्टत्यस्पर्शसहितं हि विधाय च ॥ १६ |"


Transliteration:

"nṛtyarūpaṃ śivaṃ dhyātvā cāraṇāmācared budhaḥ |

hṛdaṃ saṃspṛṣṭatyasparśasahitaṃ hi vidhāya ca ॥ 16 |"


Translation:

A wise undertakes the practice of carana meditating on Siva's dancing form.

One rotates the head while touching the chest.

One touches the heart (chest) in a manner as if not touched.
